Snow (hey oh) è una canzone del gruppo rock statunitense Red Hot Chili Peppers. E’ il terzo singolo estratto dal nono album della band Stadium Arcadium del 2006 che ha raggiunto un successo quasi inaspettato, vincendo ben 5 Grammy Award su 7 tra cui i premi come miglior album e band rock dell’anno. Snow, in particolare, ancora prima di essere pubblicato, ha ottenuto la posizione 53 nella top 100 di iTunes nel Regno Unito e in seguito ha raggiunto i primi posti nelle classifiche di altri paesi in tutto il mondo. Ancora adesso il brano viene sempre incluso nella scaletta della band nei live.Il pezzo è un riuscito mix tra genere pop e funk rock con accordi di chitarra che ti conquistano dopo pochi minuti di ascolto.
E’ una canzone fresca e ritmata che riesce a mettere di buon umore ed è piacevole all’ascolto. Di certo non possiamo considerarla uno dei massimi successi della band ma l’intento di rendere il brano leggero senza troppe aspettative è stato pienamente soddisfatto. Nel 2007 il genio di Steve Jobs sceglie Snow come canzone principale per il celebre Keynote dove viene presentato per la prima volta, nel modo degli smartphone, l’iphone. Jobs non hai mai nascosto infatti di essere un fan della band statunitense. La canzone è stata utilizzata anche per promuovere il film del 2006 Happy Feet e come colonna sonora della puntata finale dell’ ottava tagione di Scrubs.
Per quanto riguarda il testo della canzone, il topic principale è ovviamente la droga. Le due sostanze di cui Kiedis ha fatto uso nella sua vita sono bianche (cocaina ed eroina) da qui il nome “snow” che non è inteso come neve o con la stagione invernale in generale. E’ noto che il cantante, in passato, fece largo uso di droghe fin dalla tenera età, spinto purtroppo anche dal padre e la dipendenza è stata più volte oggetto delle sue canzoni come ad esempio in “Under the Bridge”. In particolare in Snow la frase “ The more I see, the less I know, the more I’d like to let it go” sta a significare che sebbene Kiedis era talmente alienato da queste droghe, la volontà di disintossicarsi c’era, anche se poi non ci riusciva nonostante gli sforzi. Il videoclip non riporta il tema della canzone in sé ma mostra la band in concerto nel 2006 all’ Izod Center di New Jersey, alternando film in bianco e nero e a colori, riprese di fans della band, lo staff e i RHCP che suonano live.
La cosa interessante di questo brano, oltre al giro di basso di Flea che fa uso delle doppie fermate, è il veloce riff iniziale del chitarrista John Frusciante. E’ piuttosto complicato per chi è alle prime armi ed è un incentivo per chi vuole studiare utilizzando il metronomo. Per iniziare ad esercitarsi su questo riff è consigliato eseguirlo molto lentamente per poi aumentare costantemente e gradualmente la velocità di 2 o 5 ppm di metronomo. La canzone, ricordiamo, è scritta in chiave di SI maggiore e gli accordi principali sono: MI, SOL#-, SI, FA#, DO#-.
